Borlotti Beans or cranberry bean, borlotto, crab eye, roman, romano, rosecoco, saluggia beans, burlotti OR barlotti (misspelling)

A dappled white and red bean related to the kidney and pinto beans. This is a common bean in Italy where it is used for soups and with pasta. Use in any recipe that calls for kidney or pinto beans

Beans feature in many Italian recipes, particularly in Tuscany. In fact the Tuscans like them so much that they have been nicknamed mangiafagioli or ‘bean eaters’: it makes Tuscany a great destination for vegetarians, as there are lots of nutritious soups and side dishes to choose from, as well as pasta dishes.

  • The bean contains vitamin B1 which is essential for carbohydrate metabolism.
